Does The Word Relationship Automatically Have To Mean Couple?
It's only recently that I started to wonder about that word relationship. I was sharing some ideas with a friend on relationships. Somewhere in the discourse I was asked "but when was your last successful relationship?"
I found myself wanting to go into defence or explanation mode. I, like him, had automatically conjured up romantic partnership when faced with the word "relationship". Thankfully I had one of those rare moments of pausing before I sprang to life with a quick response.
I found myself realizing and sharing that I was in fact experiencing loads of successful relationships. The give and take in the relationships I share with my daughter, with my family members, with friends who've been around for many years and with business colleagues are all part of my relationship success.
But the most important and biggest success I have is the relationship I'm having with myself at the moment. You see it's taken me many moons to get to the place where I have more days liking myself and being comfortable in my skin than days I do not. I think if we can get to that point in our lives, we're having major relationship success.
So next time you find yourself reminiscing about your last wonderful relationship or hoping for the next successful one, pause a moment. Consider the many great relationships you're having every day within your community and especially the one you're having with yourself.
If you feel great about those, pat yourself on the back and be grateful. Who knows where that vibration of appreciation will lead - possibly to attracting the relationship that means "couple."
