Some of us think we deserve respect from our spouse simply because we hold top positions in our place of work or in our community or because we are famous and popular worldwide. No, respect must be earned daily to save your marriage before it leads to divorce. Why is it that top celebrities can not save their marriages? Why? Character!
General J. Lawton Collins asserted, "No matter how brilliant a man may be he will never engender confidence in his spouse, subordinates and associates if he lacks honesty and moral courage." Ultimately, all the skills and talents in the world will not save your marriage if your character is flawed.
Author Stephen Covey writes, "If I try to use human influence strategies and tactics to get other people to do what I want ... and my character is fundamentally flawed ... in the long run I cannot be successful. My duplicity will breed distrust, and everything I do will be perceived as manipulative." How true is this statement in the light of the distrust and manipulative pattern in our relationships with our spouse? This is why we must sit down and build positive character and save our marriage. It makes no difference how good the rhetoric is or even how good the intentions are; if there is little or no trust, there will be no foundation for permanent success in your marriage
Character can be built, but only slowly. Slowly your character will save your marriage from a break up. If you want to know how long it will take you to save your marriage, consult a calendar. If you want to know how long it will take you to break up your marriage, try a stopwatch.
Dreams become shattered, possibilities and happiness are lost, family ties crumble and people are hurt when a person does not have character protecting his talent. Character provides the opportunity for longevity in any marriage or relationship and any worthwhile goal. Author and Pastor J. R. Miller wrote, "The only thing that walks back from the grave with the mourners and refuses to be buried, is the character of a man." What a man is, survives him, and that makes that makes a lasting difference!
