Will Money Destroy Your Marriage?

Anyone who says money isn't important must not have had their relationship torn apart by disagreements over how money should be used. Money--or more specifically, the couple's attitude towards money--is one of the leading causes of divorce.

How often have you heard the story about the wife who goes on shopping sprees until she digs her family in a hole of debt? Or how about the penny-pinching husband who freaks if his wife pays full price for flour at the grocery store? Or the guy who just won't get off his butt and get a real job?

Money issues can sink a marriage fast, which is why it's critical to ask pre marriage questions that reveal both you and your partner's attitude towards money. If you aren't of the same mind when it comes to how money should be saved, invested, and spent, you could be on the road to trouble.

When it comes to money, there are generally two types of people: Spenders and savers.

There are different kinds of spenders. On the extreme end of the spectrum, we have compulsive spenders who accumulate massive amounts of debt. Then there are those who don't necessarily have debt, but don't put aside much money for the future either.

There are also different kinds of savers. Some put aside a small amount of money each month, or they live well below their means and invest the better part of their income wisely. Then there are the hoarders, people who live in constant fear of having no money at all--they save everything they can, never go out to eat, and won't even buy mittens for winter.

If you're thinking about marriage, you should take the time to learn about each other's spending habits. You need to be willing to discuss numbers: How much do each of you make? Do either of you have debts? Do you know how much money you spend each month? What are your long term financial goals?

Asking pre marriage questions about money can be difficult and embarrassing. However, you'll have to face this issue sooner or later. Too many couples leave this to chance, only to face a mountain of financial problems after they marry.
