Sisters and Promises
Most people believe promises are made to be broken. What an odd philosophy. Promises are nothing more than an desire to please someone. Why would you want to default on something that important?
I've made many promises that I have broken, which indicates to me that I am self-serving or careless or merely forgetful; but, I made a promise tonight, to my dearest sister, and this is one that will be fulfilled. She asked that I write a special article for her. What else would I want to do for someone who makes me feel that I can, without a doubt, succeed? So, to her, my loving sibling, who has always shown our entire family that love is all you need, maybe along with a big dose of stubbornness and pride, that anything is possible if you intently want it to be, this is your article.
Girls, we have become those "older" ladies we never thought we'd become. Somehow, back in the day, we were sure we had the right to remain young and beautiful, energetic and enigmatic, innocent yet world-wise. Alas, we're just like everyone else, our hair has gone gray, our boobs have drooped, our tummies bulge, and our ambitions have slagged, but, hiddey-ho, our legs are still great!
Once upon a time, we sat on the beach, each in our own state of getting older, each feeling that we'd last a little longer than the others, adamantly telling each other, "No, you look great! How do you keep that from doing this (indicating a rather laughable roll of something around the midsection)? What did you use for that right there? I'll never let so-and-so happen to me, I'll exercise or whatever." All the while, our eyes follow the young hunk strolling along the breakers, and we exclaim how happy we are to be finished with the trials that go along with loving gorgeous men. Of course, one night would be alright, or even a weekend, but we all know better than to get involved with something like that again, don't we?
Seagulls squawk, waves swoosh, sand scrubs us raw, sun hurts, yet we persist in our quest to get one more day of sisters on the beach, a memory we will carry forever, a ritual we will want to repeat as often as possible. We promise.
The great promise. Yes, we meant it at the time, we couldn't imagine this day being the last of it's kind. We cry now at the sweetness of the memory. It wasn't about being the beautiful maiden on the sand, it wasn't even about enjoying nature at it's best. It was about being ourselves, unadorned, unencumbered, and completely free from pretention. We laughed, disagreed, discussed, plotted, planned, analyzed, and made-up stuff. We tried to out-do each other, to be the one with the best idea, the one with the best answer, the one the others would admire. We shared, cried, imagined, and advised. We were witty, ridiculous and silly, yet, all the while looking at each other and wondering "Is this the little girl I used to chase around the house threatening her life? Is this the little girl I thought was the reason for my misery? Is this the girl I swore to hate forever?"
Yes, girls, there we are. We are those girls, those women, those friends, those sisters. We made a promise, whether silent or spoken, that we would forever embrace our specialness with each other. We argue and yell and make up horrible names and tell unimaginable secrets and create liassons with each other, and yet, we cannot be divided. We become best friends in spite of ourselves.
The promise? We will never let go. We will need each other, miss each other, laugh and cry with each other until there is only one of us left. To that one I say, "Sister, you did good. Hang in there and think about us now and then. We are the reason you are who you are. We are a unit. The bond will not be broken, has never been broken, keep the promise.
Keep the promise, sister to sister, year after year.
