Friends With My Brother - Never
Twenty years ago I couldn't imagine being friends with my brother. I can remember my Mum saying, "some day you two will be best of friends". Every time she said that, I always had one word for her, "Never!"
It started from the day he first started talking. He couldn't pronounce my name so he ended up calling me Tif. Where he got Tif from Catherine is beyond me. That was just the beginning.
When he started to walk, he always would walk to my things, and of course grab them and throw them. On many occasions, he broke or damaged my treasures.
Then he started school, which was a nightmare. My Mum would have me help him with his homework, which he never wanted to do in the first place. We would end up fighting because he never wanted to complete his work.
But worst of all, were his teenage years. He would hide my things, go through my things, just do everything he could do to bug me. I can remember thinking how I wish he would grow up. He would constantly tease me about one thing or another.
And, it happened, he grew up. I am not sure at exactly what age this happened. But, he did. And strangely enough, we became the best of friends. I recently read a saying that truly applies to my brother:
"You were first a bother,
then a brother,
and now my friend."
As I read that saying, it made me smile. I recalled all the things that he used to do. My mothers voice echoed in my mind.
Today, my brother is truly a friend. Someone I can count on in good times and in bad. He has become more of a friend than a brother. While occasionally his childhood teasing still comes out, I now know what a great friend I have in him. I often quote him the saying,
"When I count my blessings, I count you twice."
Possibilities in life are endless. And, it is my hope that this story reminds you to never, say, never!
