When Friends Are Really Not Your Friend
A friend of mine came to visit me. She was very upset and in tears. After a few minutes she blurted out her story. Having had an appointment with her doctor, a follow up to a series of tests she had over the past couple of weeks that I was unaware of, the diagnoses was diabetes2. Knowing what a shock it can be, I started to talk to her after her tears stopped, hoping that what I was saying would be of help and encouragement to her, when all of a sudden the tears started up again, and shaking her head told me I did not understand. It was her friends, they did not want her to come on the holiday they had been planning. She would most likely not be able to keep up with them, and be sick a lot spoiling their holiday.
We all like to have friends. The kind we can share our good and bad times with. Friends who accept us as we are, with our varying degrees of strengths and weaknesses. Some of our friends will be closer to us than others. It is during situations like this that can really be a test of friendship for us. Some times our friends have no idea what your being a diabetic means in situations like the above. If they really are your friends they will be willing to sit down with you and allow you to educate them on the subject. The key will be how well you yourself will plan for the trip, making the right choices for yourself, knowing your own limitations, maybe having them do some sight seeing on there own if it overlaps your schedule. Keeping to your routine is important, it means you keep well, and all can have a great time.
The experience can be very positive for all. It is during times like this you find out who your friends really are. As for me, I have some great friends, and my being a diabetic has not been a problem or held me back from sharing good times with them. We have learned to communicate well to each other. I make a list of what I am going to be able to do, and so do they. When we get together we work out the realities to the satisfaction of all. Leaving room to be spontaneous in some of the things we want to do. I just make sure I keep to my routine. We all end up having a great trip, and start planning for our next one.
