Dilemmas of Divorce
This week columnists talk about Latinos and divorce.
Lily: "Always be next to your man", "keep the family together", "Men do not like women who complain." We have come a long way - or not? Marriage and divorce are never easy, but if we add to the family, culture and religion and expectations loving style movie Sleepless in Seattle this becomes a reality show nightmare. So my family I ask you: "I do not see these margaritas' poor millet." For my children I say, "failed as a wife, but I do what I can to be a good mother." The rest of the readers I say: "Divorce does not eliminate your right to happiness, only represents some potholes along the way."
Danny: This used to be taboo among Latinos. The influence of our culture mixed with religious and social pressures can destroy reality. The notions that marriage will be like a fairy tale or two souls are one, are misleading. Two people were two people. The strength of a marriage lies in the commitment of two individuals, who negotiated all the time to build love and intimacy and so forth.
Divorce is an ugly word you use to finish something that you wear forced or obliged involved in all the wrong reasons. The spiritual and emotional support is most important and expire anything. The money provides some comfort but the sexual attraction does not last forever. If you build a marriage based on this there will be inequalities.
Catherine: Latinos usually have strong family ties. In Hispanic communities is normal for children living with their parents until they marry to help with the expenses of the house. The family name is an integral part of social and business relations. Because of this emphasis on family unity, divorce has been rejected in Latino circles. If the divorce is rare in their community, nobody wants to be first. Divorce puts a very strong stress on families, but friendships and business relationships.
While divorce is taboo among Latinos, marriage problems are universal. Marriage is an agreement and not a business contract can be canceled if someone is upset by something. In American culture, if a person does not feel happy endorse divorce. Happiness is the result of a good marriage and not a requirement.
