Improving Your Torso Flexibility for Golf

Golfers need to have good upper torso mobility and flexibility. Common swing faults usually occur when an individual is tight and has a lack of mobility in the shoulder, and the hip joint. When shoulder rotation is restricted the body tends to compensate with excessive spinal rotation. This can result in a back injury because most people already lack flexibility in the spine. The result is golfers will notice that they have difficulties in keeping their eyes on the ball and maintaining an optimal swing plane.

During the swing the results usually mean hitting those retched fat or thin shots. Even worse the chances of a hook or slice increases. The tightness you experience in your hip joint muscles places additional strain on the rotational requirements of the shoulder or spine. Often you will compensate by lifting up during the back swing and then chop down on the ball resulting in a nasty fat shot. Here are a few solutions to help increase your flexibility in the torso.

Stability ball torso twists: begin by sitting on a stability ball; place a club across your shoulder blades, behind your neck. Keeping your lower body stable and an up right posture slowly rotate your body from left to right. Try and hold each position briefly.

Lying stability ball Russian twist: begin lying on the floor with your lower legs on a stability ball. Knees should be bent at 90 degrees. Rotate your trunk and allow your legs to roll the stability ball from side to side. Remember to keep your back flat and not to over rotate.

Lying Hip Rotations: lie on your back face up, arms placed at 90 degree with your palms face up. Bend the knees, feet & legs together, toes pointed towards you shins. Drop your knees to the left than to the right, rotating from side to side. Maintain your shoulders on the ground. Keep your feet and knees together, draw your navel inwards. You should feel this in your torso.
