Play Better Golf
It's spring time again and for golfers that means it's time to take the clubs out of the garage and get ready for another year of the greatest game on earth. I have been playing golf for over forty years. I'm one of those guys that can pick up the clubs and hit a small bucket of balls on the driving range and be ready to shoot in the 80's or lower.
Over the years I have had many people ask me if I could teach them to play. What I have discovered is that it is not that easy to teach someone to play golf. That is what got me thinking about what a person could do to give themselves the best chance to learn to play at a higher level and this is what I've come up with.
First, I thought about my own experience and how I was able to learn to play. The single most important thing I did while I was learning to play was to read a book written by a golf professional. The book was written in a way to make it very easy reading and was well illustrated. As I thought about this I realized that I had never taken a live lesson and that anything that playing partners had told me I wouldn't be able to recall. As I analysed this further I believe I learned why this had been so effective. When you are listening to someone tell you how to do something that's exactly what happens. You end up doing or trying to do what someone else thinks you should do. I believe that learning from a book was effective for me because what I was actually doing is teaching myself how to play. Because I was using my mind to disect the information and then visualizing how to apply the information in a way that worked for me I ended up teaching myself how to play golf and it became like the old saying "like riding a bike". When you learn to play this way I think it becomes part of you, hence the ability to pick up the clubs after 6 mos. and still be able to have that feel.
Now I tell people that want me to teach them that they would be a lot better off teaching themselves. I recently have started working at home on the computer as an affiliate. I wanted to start with something I know about so naturally I ended up on the subject of golf. I now can point people in the right direction to find well written instruction that they can use to teach themselves to play golf at a higher level and discover just how much fun it can be.
