Last Chance - Buc Stops Here for Wide Receiver Antonio Bryant

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a shot in the dark on Monday, signing often troubled Receiver Antonio Bryant to an undisclosed contract.

Though he has the skill set to be the teams #2 target and possible replacement following the eventual retirement of Joey Galloway, his track record speaks less than volumes on the character he has carried to the table thus far in his still young and promising career.

In a 2006 report, Bryant's former coach Mike Nolan told reporters "He does get excited about certain things. He wants to get the ball... and at times maybe hasn't shown that in the best ways."

Sound familiar?

In 2002, Dallas drafted Antonio Bryant with their second round pick out of the University of Pittsburgh. A former Fred Belitnikoff award winner, Bryant cought 83 passes for 1,289 yards and 8 touchdowns in his first two seasons with the team. During the Cowboys' 2004 campaign, Bryant had a heated exchange with then head coach Bill Parcells and was immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns after just 266 yards and 16 catches.

With the Browns, Bryant caught 42 passes for 546 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2004, and bested that the following season by racking up a career best 64 catches for 1,009 yards and 4 touchdowns.

That off-season, the San Francisco 49ers gave him a 14 million dollar contract, but following just 40 catches, he was suspended for the final 2 games of the season as well as the first 2 games of the 2007 season for charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and resisting arrest. He was released before this past season started due to a feud with Mike Nolan. He has yet to play in the NFL since due to the inability to pass a drug test.

Two things can happen. Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden can look like heroes for saving Bryant's career and adding an amazing weapon to the teams offense, or could contradict themselves by wasting money on a player who has the uncanny ability to resemble not only Keyshawn Johnson, but Dwight Smith with off and on the field antics that cant possible help the teams cause.
