Rowboat Fishing - Tyee Salmon Fishing Adventure
The sun is still below the horizon an hour before dawn at the Campbell River Tyee Hole. Thirty or so "Tyee Spirit" fishing rowboats are on the water, quietly slipping along under oar power, fishing for the big ones, giant Spring Salmon, that make this town famous on the BC coast.
14' lapstrake styled rowing boats have plied these waters for close to a hundred years. John Wayne, Bob Hope and even the Kennedy's have experienced the thrill of landing a Tyee Salmon while rowing in these famous fishing boats. For the last 20 years, most of these boats have been almost exclusively built by Whitehall Rowing and Sail, builders of the world's finest recreational rowing boats, located in Victoria, BC.
These waters, at the south end of Discovery Passage, have a fast tidal run of up to five knots and the channel is exposed to the north and south. Even a fifteen-knot wind will raise a vicious chop when opposing the tide. Large ocean vessels also proceed through this channel and their wakes can be several feet high.
It takes a real "sea boat" to handle these conditions and in the last hundred years none have equaled the unique qualities inherent in the Tyee Spirit 14. The shape of the Tyee Spirit does not begin to resemble the square simple shapes found in most all modern fishing powerboats. The Tyee Spirit has smooth, flowing, classic lines that catch the eye. The bow and the stern are shaped so that waves pass easily under the hull without disturbing its trim or the fisher's concentration. The rower, usually in the forward position, skillfully maneuvers the boat to keep clear of fellow rowboats.
Anyone can fish these turbulent waters, however in order to qualify as a member of the elite Campbell River Tyee Club, keepers of the official record of fish caught, you must have landed a fish weighing in at over 30 pounds and no engines can be operated while actually fishing. Oars are the only propulsion permitted to hold the boats precisely in position. Larger Tyee Salmon can be 60 pounds. It's a challenge that keeps people coming back to try their luck and skill fishing the Tyee Hole for generations.
Once a fish is hooked the real fun begins, as these salmon are powerful and fast. Tangled lines and other boats must then be avoided or the cost is losing a chance to land one of these splendid Tyee Salmon.
Rowboat fishing, like the spawning Salmon, is progressing in leaps and bounds since the recent recognition of the harmful impact gas powered outboards have on the water environment. In Wisconsin, where powered boats are no longer allowed on most lakes, professional guides and sport fishers alike regard the Tyee Spirit rowboat as the ultimate Muskie fishing boat. It's all part of a "quiet revolution" that is gaining ground by eliminating noise and air pollution while leaving no oily footprint. In the challenging west coast waters of British Columbia fishers have enjoyed rowboat fishing annually for over a hundred years.
