The Chinese have just bumped up military spending by 17.8% this year. Asking the Chinese to be transparent about their military agenda is a bit like casually asking Darth Vader to be transparent about the Empire's new and improved Death Star plans. It ain't going to happen. Chinese ship building has been in high gear since 2002. Amphibious assault vessels, capable of ferrying troops have been a major focus. Some intelligence estimates suggest that some 20 of these vessels are in the works, along with a fleet of submarines.

It took the Soviets 10 years and the loss of 15, 000 troops before they admitted they admitted defeat in Afghanistan. For the West, it will not take so long for the slow bleed to become a hemorrhage. It will be only a matter of one or two years, at the most before, Afghanistan falls and the country collapses again into fragmentation and internal civil war. It may indeed come sooner. The Soviets were prepared to fight to the death in Afghanistan because they knew the edge of their empire was crumbling and a domino effect on its other republics would follow. The Soviet bureaucracy was fighting for its life.

I really like the concept of "citizen legislation" -- the popular representation system in force in many U.S. States where state legislators are elected only for a couple of years (usually two) and are paid very symbolic amounts, usually for a part-time job that lasts from 3 to 6 months a year. This automatically filters out all career mongers who get elected to line up their pockets. Who would get into politics if a deputy's annual salary is just a couple thousand dollars - or as in New Hampshire, only $100 (one hundred) a year? Why, only those idealists who take pleasure in serving the public of course.
Time to Quarantine Africa - AIDS it s Too Late!
Tracking the Monster which is out of control in Africa is easy, because AIDS is everywhere. People are dying and leaving behind children, worse off children are being born with HIV and the situation is dire. These horrific situations are almost insurmountable. Some are already calling for the complete quarantine of much of Africa and simply let the disease run its course. Of course it will kill everyone. But if we give up hope or quit the mission will that solve any problem? What about China and India where AIDS is also spreading, do we plan to quarantine them too? Forget about Bird Flu, AIDS is already fully blown and out of control in Africa.
