I Love Lucy: Largest Known Diamond In The Galaxy
Lucy is the largest known diamond in the galaxy. She is 2, 500 miles across and weighs 5 million trillion trillion pounds. Translating this to carats would mean an approximation of 10 billion trillion trillion carats. That"s a one followed by 34 zeros. No way could anyone wear that. She is definitely too big for Earth. At today"s rate, not even the world"s richest people combined could afford to purchase Lucy. In the long run though, the possible acquisition of Lucy would be quite alarming to miners, jewelers, as well as economists all over the world; as her estimated value might deflate the market for all known gems on Earth.
HAITI - Creole, Literacy, and Education
The question as to which language or languages to use in educating the children of Haiti and in adult literacy programs, which are organized by both government and voluntary organizations in Haiti, has generated a lot of debate among educationists and the Haitian public at large. Two languages are spoken in Haiti, Creole and French. Creole is the most universally spoken language in Haiti, accounting for over ninety percent of native monolingual speakers; whereas French language has for the past two centuries enjoyed the pride of place as the country"s sole medium of official government and business transactions as well as the language of education.
Divergent Philosophies Of Founding Fathers On Education
"EDUCATION MEANS DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE... " Its specific purpose was controversial then as it is clouded now. Everyone agreed, in general, that it would so some good. When the Colony of Massachusetts enacted the Compulsory Education Law in 1642, it was to prevent the young from degenerating into savagery. In other words, it was to preserve civilization and to prepare for the unexpected (Perkinson, 1991). Two hundreds fifty years later, American sociologist Edward Ross concurred that education was an expensive form of police, (Joel Spring, 1989). The configuration of education had changed as the nation proclaimed its independence in 1776.
Minority Education
By the late 19th century, educational debates were still echoing on "who was to be educated? " and "how this education was to be carried out? " Such philosophers as John Dewey and (closer to us) Jean Piaget understood that "all knowledge has a special origin and the interests of the child are the primary source of learning" (Spring 1989). The same author said that after the Civil War black leaders, particularly W.E. Dubois and Booker T. Washington debated not the importance of schooling but the kind of education for blacks. The latter, considered by many blacks as a traitor, would acquiesce with the 1895 Plessy v.
Return to Jesusland
Presidential elections show all citizens that politicians will always be politicians. The city to city tours of kissing babies and endless photos give all Americans the opportunity to begin selecting the candidate that is most like them. In the Heartland, generally considered "flyover" country, people get more attention now then ever. The political landscape of America is still firmly split into the "Red State vs. Blue State" categories with little shifting to one side or the other. But don"t tell the politicians that because nothing is more entertaining than a Northeastern liberal coming to the South and breaking into a slow southern drawl.
Individual Responsibility vs. Universal Entitlement Programs
With politicians now jockeying for positions for the 2008 presidential election, we Americans again hear the cries for "universal healthcare". Apparently across our great country, those responsible individuals who take sick and have insurance that they pay for are being turned away from hospitals in mass. Thank goodness we have presidential candidates lining up to take away another freedom we enjoy. Sorry, I am not buying it, yes our present healthcare system needs tweaking, but I refuse to believe the only fix is healthcare for all, at the taxpayer expense. Maybe it is time for Americans to realize that you should do some things for yourself if your health is that important to you, and you have no right to think that you are entitled to having others foot the bill.
Enduring Peace
Enduring peace is the ultimate goal of any free society. It cannot be replaced successfully by anything and should be the most important objective to defend to someone who truly relishes it. Along with the pursuit and preservation of peace, should be the unwavering stance of defending the same at any cost. Peace must at all times be defended against those who choose to propagate fear and intolerance. Adversaries to tranquility should have no relief from the fear of being defeated militarily by peace loving societies and cultures. Anyone who stands in the face of harmony never deserves the opportunity to spread to others the radical elements of division and superiority that drives one to begin conflict.
