Individual Responsibility vs. Universal Entitlement Programs
With politicians now jockeying for positions for the 2008 presidential election, we Americans again hear the cries for "universal healthcare". Apparently across our great country, those responsible individuals who take sick and have insurance that they pay for are being turned away from hospitals in mass. Thank goodness we have presidential candidates lining up to take away another freedom we enjoy. Sorry, I am not buying it, yes our present healthcare system needs tweaking, but I refuse to believe the only fix is healthcare for all, at the taxpayer expense. Maybe it is time for Americans to realize that you should do some things for yourself if your health is that important to you, and you have no right to think that you are entitled to having others foot the bill. It seems this talk kicks up about the same time every four years and hopefully it will end as it always does with no action being taken.
The first thing that bothers me when I hear politicians, old and new, stating we need universal health care, education or anything for that matter is that they think the public at whole is too ignorant and lazy to acquire these things for themselves. I personally find it repulsive that anyone believes they can make better decisions for my life than me. When did it become acceptable for politicians to dictate the parameters of life in this country beyond their own? Sadly it seems many in this country are unable to act with individual responsibility and endlessly defend that same basic freedom. It is obvious that those seeking the highest position of the land can"t wait to take it from you, and shamelessly campaign on the subject as thought they are the Almighty. The second thing I take issue with is the fact that once implemented, any universal policy will never end. When is the last time you heard of a politician proposing or voting for a pay cut or the absolute end of an entitlement program? Unfortunately this will never happen, not under our current system of government. The proof of that can easily be seen when looking at the leftover social programs from the recovery of the "Great Depression". Can one truly argue that giving people Social Security all these years is a benefit to America? What would be the present state of our country had some politician stood up for freedom and individual responsibility and successfully gotten the federal government to end this program decades ago as it should have been. Nothing good will ever come from creating programs that give your citizens a sense of entitlement rather the reinforcing the fact that if you don"t work hard and plan for the future you will suffer.
To many it is unacceptable in this country of great wealth and prosperity that some go without their basic needs being met. Those same people should find a way in the private sector to redistribute their wealth to the ones in our nation who have chosen to not meet those needs themselves. The only groups in this country worthy of having taxpayers pick up their tabs are anyone 18 years old and younger and our great military veterans. Everyone else falls into the category of being able to do things for themselves and should be treated as such. Any compulsion to financially assist the poor, old, and cripple should be a local, state, or family issue at all times keeping the federal government out of the equation.
How many more Hurricane Katrina"s or September 11"s does this country need to suffer through before it realizes that the federal government has gotten itself far too involved in the lives of its citizens at the expense of carrying out its basic functions. Security should be the primary function of our government, not making sure everyone has health insurance or Social Security. If al Qaeda, Iran, or North Korea, or all of them attacked us tomorrow who would be wondering if their check was still coming? Being alive may take higher precedence over economic viability. At this point of America"s existence we should be showing the rest of the world that being responsible for yourself and hard work alleviates the need for social programs that hinder your citizenry more than enhance them. Government programs such as Social Security created to relieve the economic heartaches of the "Great Depression" have no place in securing the last years of people who choose to do nothing meaningful in their lives. By no means do I mean that being poor makes you irrelevant or less than in any way, but you did at some point settle for less than, and some aspect of your life then gave you misplaced comfort in that decision. But what else does it tell people when your government is willing to pay for just about anything (in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina it seems it did) and in essence rewards doing nothing with your life and punishes those who are highly successful. In our two party political system, one party primarily survives on promises of higher taxes on the hard working, rich, and successful; increased benefits for the unsuccessful, and raises of the minimum wage; all things that are achievable to anyone who really wants them without federal government assistance or interference.
