Make Sure You Install Wordpress In The Root Directory
To often people end up buying a hosting package, that has allot to offer, which is what we all want. Many of the extras that come with the package, such as Fantastico, need to be dealt with in a certain way! Fantastico scripts are usually installed when a new website is created, or a new application is added to a pre-existing website. The scripts normally create tables within the database, install software, modify web server configuration files, and adjust permissions .
Although Fantastico is typically associated with open-source software, a handful of scripts are also available which install commercial products, which once installed, are available to all of the domains hosted by a physical server; such as web site builder SohoLaunch, PerlDesk customer support software, and AccountLab Plus software for interacting with Internet registrars. There are more than 50 applications that have Fantastico scripts associated with them. The most commonly added systems include:
1.Shopping cart software
2.Blogs
3.Wikis
4.Web content management system
5.Photo sharing
I'm not familiar with all of the applications with Fantastico. The main one that I have dealt with and had problems with, was the installation of a Wordpress Blog! The Wordpress Blog can be installed by using Fantastico, as it's one of the many applications within Fantastico.
When installing....which is automatically done for the user. Always install your blog in the root directory. If not it will be automatically installed in a sub-directory.
When installed in the root directory, this will allow your blog to be spidered by the search engines, which is very, very important! Also if you made the mistake and installed it in the sub-directory, it will be a difficult process to move it to the root.
At one time I had several blogs that were installed in the sub-directory. I couldn't understand why they weren't being spidered. Then I discovered, that they should of been installed in the root. The support from my host, was useless in this situation. In the end, I just deleted all the blogs, retained what content I had, and started over, with a new blog installed in the root directory.
So save yourself allot of headaches, and always install in the root. It will pay to do so!
