Getting One Way Links To Your Site For Free
Google's algorithms are changing again, and direct link exchanges are now worth much less to both the sites than they once were.
Getting one way links pointing to your site from another site, without reciprocal linking, is now very important in increasing your site's importance to Google.
Of course, another benefit of your site's URL being placed on other sites is increased traffic for your site.
How to get one way links?
First, know exactly what your niche is, and target other sites that share that niche, or are complementary to that niche. An example would be guitars. Your site sells guitar sheet music, so complementary sites would be those that sold guitars, or guitar lessons.
Do not aim to get listed on FFAs - free-for-all sites that will add any site no matter the topic. Google will deduct points off your site for this.
Do get listed on sites with as high a Page Rank as possible. 2 or over preferably.
Do not get listed on a site with 0 PR. While that site may be just getting started and not have a PR yet, which is fine, a 0 PR may indicate that Google has penalised them for something. Getting listed on a penalised site will reflect on your site, so it's not worth the risk.
When I talk about the PR of a site, I mean the home page of the site, not the internal pages.
There are hundreds of ways to get incoming links, here are just a few.....
1. Blog Comments
Find blogs in your niche. Most blogs welcome comments to blog posts, provided they are relevant to the post. Make a comment on something the blog poster has said, and make sure you include your URL. This infers you have some authority to make a comment. Do not say - "good post, have a look at my site www.mysite.com". This is blatant advertising that could be inferred as spam. Since most blogmasters have the option of vetoing comments, you can be sure a comment like that won't last long. Make your comment informative and relevant to the original post.

2. Forums
A similar idea to blog comments. Find forums in your niche, register and set up your profile. In that profile, set up your signature. This is a small block of text that will appear at the end of each of your posts. Put your URL in the signature. Start browsing the threads. Find a post asking for help that you have an answer for, or a comment, and reply to the thread. Your signature will then appear at the end of your post. Note, most forums will tell you how many members they have, at the bottom left hand side of the home page. A good forum will have over 1000 members. Do read the rules of each forum so you don't get blacklisted. Some forums won't accept URLs in signatures, while some insist on at least 10 posts before they allow it. If the forum is strong enough, with good membership, then it is worthwhile to do that. To find forums, do a search for ... your topic + forum or discussion board
3. Articles
There are hundreds of sites that are article directories, with thousands of articles in them, under various categories. Unlike FFA sites, these are expected to have many topics. Each article is attributed to its author, in different ways. Some just have a link back to your site, however the best ones have a resource box at the bottom. Here is where you do a brief rave about you and/or your site, and list your URL. Most have minimum and maximum number of words. If your article is longer, divide it up into 2 parts, and in the title, say it is Part 1, Part 2 etc.
Not only will this give your site a one-way link, it can result in many more without any effort on your part. This is because your article can be taken by webmasters and duplicated anywhere on the web, provided the resource box is kept intact. Articles may also be used in newsletters and ezines. Fresh content is good for websites, and webmasters are always looking for more. For them article sites are a boon.
