Millions of people use the internet each and every day to find things that they want. Years ago, people had an easier time finding exactly what they were looking for because there were very few sellers online. The situation is quite different now, as there seems to be an endless supply of sellers!
You now have tons and tons of sellers competing for the same searches, though most do not take much time into developing their websites. They will create a generic site with generic software, and web visitors are left puzzled as they try to search through the net to find exactly what they are looking for.
Search engines help people find what they are looking for. Google, for example, creates a user interface that allows people to specify exactly what they are looking for. Various methods are then used by google to return what they feel to be the most relevant results. Google offers both organic and paid searches, based on a complex script that travels the internet, categorizing content in the best way they know.
So how then, do people compete in the search engine results and get their websites listed at the top? By employing SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization. This includes making sure that the website designed contains the keywords that people are searching for, and is presented in a manner that will encourage sales.
There needs to be a tangible relationship between keywords and relevant content. Remember, this is all about the search engines finding the most relevant results for its visitors. Would you use a search engine that did not return relevant results?
Keyword selection is a complex process, and involves putting oneself in the position of the internet surfer, whom is looking for things they want. It also involves analyzing past traffic, to see what people have been searching for in the past, and matching that up to what your website offers.
Keyword selection is incredibly important in every single SEO campaign. If you build a site that does not contain the types of keywords that people are actually looking for, you will miss out on a huge traffic opportunity. Of course you also need to do everything possible to ensure that your website is something visitors will want to see as well.
