This can be done by one of three ways. Either you contribute to a website or forum and you get a back link to your website. You swap links with another website which means you also have to link back to them, or you write quality content and people naturally link back to you. I would recommend getting natural links as they more often than not hold the most weight with the search engines.
With effective off-page and on-page optimization techniques you can ensure you get plenty of traffic from search engines. Just don't forget your target audience is not a search engine but real people. Don't compromise your website quality in order to please the search engines.
