Your Online Shopping Cart - Is It Secure?

Even in this age of widespread online shopping, many people are reluctant to give their credit card information because they are afraid of identify theft.

The only true way to protect your customers' personal information (and thus your sales) is to provide a secure online shopping environment. The recommended way to do this is through your shopping cart.

This is a good reason for not hosting your cart on your own server, because making that secure can be a hassle --- and an expensive one at that.

The simplest way to provide online security is to choose a shopping cart that is hosted on its own secure server. When you are doing your research, be sure to check out any shopping carts you look at to confirm that they provide this security.

When you are on a secure site you can tell, because the url will begin with https: instead of just http: . Test this out on any shopping cart you are thinking of using --- and any time YOU are ordering online.

Of course, if you want to encourage people to buy it's important that your online ordering system not only IS secure but is SEEN to be secure. If your shopping cart server is secure, which it certainly should be, it will probably say so right on the order screen. It may also provide you with a button or other sign that tells visitors they are on a secure site.

If you host your own shopping cart, and you have gone to the trouble of making it secure, you may have to use a paid service such as verisign.com to tell your visitors.

In any case, make sure your customers know they can easily order through your secure online shopping system --- you'll see the results in increased sales.
