Dental Insurance Plans - Do Not Buy Any Dental Plan Until You ve Read This
What are you looking to accomplish when you start your search for a new dental plan? I'm not trying to be nosy or confuse you in any way, but there's a good reason behind this question and it's very likely that you won't know the reason behind why I'm asking you this.
You see, if you are looking for a dental plan in order to get your teeth fixed for an existing condition, then it's important that you know that dental insurance will not provide coverage for any pre-existing conditions. This included caries (cavities), dentures, broken or missing teeth, gingivitis or any other condition that was already there at the time that you bought the insurance policy.
Dental insurance will pay for preventive dental care, such as cleanings, x-rays, etc, in order to help prevent major dental problems in the future that would be more costly.
One alternative to dental insurance is called a "discount dental plan". Discount plans are similar to a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) in standard health plans. The way that these plans work is by working on a reduced scale by charging the patient less money for care, but requiring payment in full at the time of the visit. This way the dentist doesn't have to wait 45 days or more for reimbursement from an insurance company and they don't have to pay anyone to fill out time consuming paperwork.
One disadvantage of a discount dental plan is that you must always pay for your visit, even if it's at a reduced rate. There aren't any standard deductibles or annual limits, but you still can't see a dentist without having cash in hand.
There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to each of these types of dental plans. You should always consider these factors before you choose a dental plan for yourself or your family.
