Overseas Auto Insurance - Making Sure You Are Covered Abroad

If you are planning to do some driving while you are abroad, you may have given thought to getting some overseas auto-insurance once you get there. While this is undoubtedly a good idea, you many find that your present car insurance policy actually allows you extended breakdown cover abroad. Aside from the convenience factor that such insurance plans offer, you will likely have to pay much lower costs than if you go for a foreign car insurance policy in your country of destination.

If you do decide to apply for extended coverage, you should make sure that your present plan actually includes breakdown coverage for the specific country that you intend to travel to. The time to do this is well before you leave on your trip, since you wouldn't want to be in an accident or in need of car repair on the road in a foreign country before realizing that your insurance plan doesn't cover you at all. Even if you don't get into any type of mishap, you may end up having to settle for a more expensive overseas auto-insurance plan when you find out you don't have coverage once you are already there.

Regardless of whether you go for a foreign car insurance plan or ask for extended coverage from your existing car insurance company, it is essential to have all the necessary documents with you when driving abroad. This will ensure that you are prepared for any incident and that minor traffic mishaps won't impact on your trip too much.
