Third Party Car Insurance - 90 Second Guide
Following on from our 90 second guide to comprehensive car insurance, we guide you through the ins and outs of choosing the right third party motor policy.
It is worth noting that if your vehicle is valued over 5000 you cannot (by law) take out this minimum level of third party cover.
Third Party Only (TPO) Insurance
Covers liability to third parties i.e. claims made by third parties, against you, for bodily injury or damage to their property:

Liability for injuries to other people, including passengers

Liability for damage to other people's property

Liability of passengers for accidents caused by them

Liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the car
Adding fire and theft will provide protection against damage to, or loss of your vehicle due to it being stolen or set on fire. It also possible to include cover for legal fees in case you require a solicitor to represent you.
Third party fire and theft car insurance is cheaper than a standard Fully Comprehensive Policy. This is due to the reduced risk taken on by the insurer - because you are not insuring yourself or any damage to your vehicle!
Policy Options and Extras
Nearly all leading motor insurers will offer a range of Additional Policy Extras, enabling you to tailor your 3rd party, fire and theft policy to suit your motoring needs.
By selecting this level of protection you are choosing the minimum level of cover for your vehicle as required by the Road Traffic Act 1988. The Act states that a car user must be insured by a member of the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB).
