Infertility Studies Show Surprising Links

Anyone doing a little web research will find some interesting studies related to causes of infertility. You are apt to find a few linkages that you would not have thought of, such as cell phone usage, Viagra usage, Trans Fatty Acids, and even infertility treatments themselves.

Couples who live with infertility are obviously interested in any link to possible causes. They"re eager to find any reason for their pain, and go to great lengths to undergo treatments, follow regimens, avoid certain lifestyles; whatever will help to have a chance at conceiving a child. They unquestionably do their research, and try to uncover as many causes as possible to make the essential changes in their lives.

The Cell Phone Study:

Men who use cell phones more than the average may suffer sperm damage. This startling fact was taken from a presentation made at a recent American Society of Reproductive Medicine conference. The study included a group of men from an infertility clinic. Researchers divided the men into separate groups; one group did not use cell phones at all during the study, one group used a cell phone less that two hours each day, another used a cell phone for 2 to 4 hours a day and the fourth group used a cell phone for more than 4 hours each day.

The group of men that used their phone for 4 hours a day showed a 30% decrease in sperm viability and motility compared to the first group of men, those not using cell phones during the study. The study also showed that with each level of increased cell phone usage sperm count, quality and shape were also reduced. One explanation theorized that the cell phones are damaging the DNA of the males who used the phones. Trans Fats Study

According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a woman who consumes foods containing Trans Fatty Acids (TFA) has a 70 percent higher risk of having infertility problems. Trans fats themselves have no nutritional value and are be found in processed and fried foods. Trans fats are used to increase the shelf life of these foods. This study points out that women who attributed 2% of their daily calories to trans fats were 70 to 100% more likely to experience infertility due to ovulation problems. Such a level of TFAs could be found in just one normal sized doughnut or regular size fries.

A Viagra Usage Study

Males with erectile disfunction employ Viagra to restore sexual performance. Couples attempting to conceive are intensely aware of the need for the male to be able to perform. It is likely that men would also choose to use this drug at a time when they may be asked to "perform" more frequently attempts to conceive a child. The study out of Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, implies that Viagra causes sperm to prematurely release the digestive enzymes used by the sperm to break down the shell of the ova (egg released by the woman). This process is known as the acrosome reaction. Premature acrosome reactions would seriously lessen the chance of fertilization from occurring.

The Infertility Treatment Study:

Possibly the most disturbing study is the one that declares that the very treatments that women are undergoing to help them conceive are related to their decreased fertility. The study was made up of two groups of women. One group received IUI"s and the medications that normally are given for this process to stimulate ovulation. The second group of women all tried to conceive naturally. Normal miscarriage rates of both groups were taken into account so that the results were not skewed by this aspect. 34% of the women in the natural group conceived and had normal pregnancies, compared to a 29% who conceived normal pregnancies in the IUI group. This is counter to what would be expected and needs further corroboration and study.
