How Do Malabsorptive Gastric Bypass Procedures Work?
With the average gastric bypass procedure, a pouch the size of one cup of food is made in the stomach in order to lower the amount of food you can ingest which in turn helps the patient to loose weight. However, when it comes to the malabsorption gastric bypass procedure the pouch is made a little bit larger but at the same time altering the anatomy of the patient's small intestine which in effect controls the amount of food digested to a greater degree than with the standard procedure.
The surgeon instead focuses his or her attention to altering the small intestines in such a way as to allow for more or less digestion of vitamins and fats. This type of bypass takes a little more time than the standard gastric bypass but can show better results with fewer complications. The reason for this is that the number one complication associated with a gastric bypass surgery is the dumping syndrome. This dumping syndrome is caused by ingestion too many sweets as well as eating so much food that you become sick and begin to vomit as a result. In order to bypass this syndrome the malabsorptive procedure was created to allow the patient to be able to consume slightly more food, but rather than allowing the body to digest the full amount the small intestine has been altered so that the body only digests the same amount of vitamins and fats as the standard bypass.
It is important that anyone who is even contemplating undergoing a gastric bypass surgery to know and understand the risks and complications associated with the procedure. Furthermore the patient also has to have the willingness to completely change his or her lifestyle and eating habits in order to keep the weight off. Any surgery should never be considered a sure miracle for excessive weight as if the person is unable to change their diets and lifestyle then it is completely plausible to regain all of the weight they had before the procedure. Not only can you regain the weight but in many cases you may regain the weight with some serious complications added to it further endangering your health.
