5 Diet Myths
Dieting is hard and it is rarely fun. The hope is that in the end the pain of the diet will pay off with a great amount of weight loss that will stay off forever. We all want it to be as easy and painless as possible, so it is easy to fall prey to the promises that diet product that make huge promises. I have outlined 5 diet myths that will open your eyes and make you a more savvy dieter.
Myth#1 A fad diet will result in permanent weight loss
Truth: you may lose weight at first with a fad diet, but when you are participating in a program that restricts calories to an extreme or only allows you to eat a few certain foods are almost impossible to follow.
Most people are able to follow a fad diet for a short time and then gain all of the weight the lost back plus some. Diets that contain less than 800 calories a day can result in disruptions in your heart rhythm which can be fatal.
What to do: Losing to 2 pounds a week, by making healthy food choices, eating appropriate portions and participating in some type of physical activity, research suggests you will not only lose weight you will lower your risk for:
Diabetes
Heart disease
High blood pressure
Depression
Osteoporosis
And many other health disorders.
Myth #2: High protein/low carbohydrate diets are a healthy way to lose weight.
Truth: while the long term effects of high protein/low carbohydrate diets are not yet known, getting most of your calories from foods that have a high fat content, like meat, eggs and cheese, raises your risk for heart disease and high cholesterol. This is not a balanced eating plan. If you cut out most fruits, vegetables and whole grains, the lack of fiber may make you become constipated.
Eating fewer than 130 grams of carbohydrates a day can lead to the build up of ketones in your blood. This can cause high levels of uric acid which raises your risk for gout, and kidney stones.
What to do: The foods in high protein/low carbohydrate diets are limited causing a decrease in caloric intake. This can cause short term weight loss. However, a weight loss plan that includes a balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate will result in more successful long term weight loss.
Myth #3 Starches need to be limited when trying to lose weight
Truth: there are many foods that are high in starch and low in calories. Like bread, rice, pasta and cereal.
The problem occurs when these foods are eaten in large amounts or when they are smothered with high fat toppings like butter, sour cream, cheese or mayonnaise. Starch is an important source of energy for your body.
What to do: Pay attention to serving size and watch what you are putting on top of your starches. You can also eat starches that are less processed like whole wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal, beans, peas and other vegetables.
Myth #4 There are specific foods that can make you lose weight
Truth: we have all heard that if you eat foods like grapefruit, celery or cabbage soup, you will drop unwanted pounds. This is not true. There are no foods that burn fat.
What to do: The best way to lose weight is by eating a diet that contains all of the food groups, and eating portions that are smaller, while eating more meals through out the day, also, add some type of physical activity to your daily routine.
Myth #5 Herbal or natural weight loss products are safe and they work
Truth: Even when a weight loss product says it is natural, that doesn't mean it is. These products are almost never scientifically tested and proven to be safe or effective. Often times these products make a huge entrance onto the market, just to be pulled off of the shelves within a few months because of health risks.
What to do: Talk with your doctor before you use any weight loss product. They will be able to assist you in finding a way to lose weight without putting your health at risk.
Educating yourself by busting these diet myths will propel you along the journey to your goals. Remember that there is no quick fix and that in order to have weight loss that will be long term, you must make lifestyle choices you can live with for the rest of your life. Be patient and remember, slow and steady wins the race.
