Water Borne Endocrine Disruptors

The endocrine system is responsible for sending chemical signals throughout the body. The organs of the endocrine system secrete hormones and are received by receptor cells. This communication can be responsible for heart rate, sweating, growth, reproduction, and many other important bodily functions.

The endocrine communication system can be disrupted or altered by man-made chemicals which mimic our body's own signals. These man-made chemicals can include plastics, pesticides, birth control pills, detergents, and PCB's to name a few.

So what effect does this have on a man's reproductive system? Reduced sperm counts and infertility is a common effect. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 cases of male infertility are due to environmental causes. Many don't realize that one of the most common sources of exposure to endocrine disruptors is through the water supply.

Runoff from farms pollute the water supply with pesticides. Sewage contains PCB's, detergents and pharmaceutical drugs and can easily find a path to rivers. In many rivers you will find influent pumps to drinking water treatment plants. To combat this many people drink bottled water, but this gives a false sense of security. Plastic bottles contain pthalates which have a strong endocrine disrupting capacity.

So how do you avoid endocrine disruptors?
-wear natural fibers
-drink from glass bottles whenever possible
-never microwave in plastic containers
-install a whole home water filter and/or reverse osmosis system for drinking water
-get rid of your rug in favor of natural wood flooring
-use natural detergents for bathing and washing clothes (there are some great ones out there)
-eat organic food as much as possible or natural foods without pesticides or hormones
