What are the Vital Things to Know Concerning Sleep Terrors?

It is quite possible that you suffer from a condition call sleep terror disorder once many of your friends and family have attested to the fact you have episodes of suddenly awakening from sleep, temporarily and then you acted or appeared to be scared.

Sleep terror is a type of parasomnias sleeping disorder. It is often referred to as pavor nocturnus, once the sleep terror episode happens to children of very young ages. They are the most frequent sufferers of the sleep terror. On the other hand, if the sleep terror occurs to adults, it is often referred to as incubus.

Episodes of sleep terror disorder do not occur only during the nighttime. Even if a person is having his or her daytime nap, there is a possibility of a sleep terror episode. Children are most vulnerable to sleep terrors. Once a child reaches the age of 4 years old and on to his or her 12th year, he or she may experience frequent episodes of sleep terror. There is no need to fret, though, since once a child reaches adolescence the symptoms often disappear altogether. Some adults are also prone to sleep terror and its symptoms.

There is not much information to go on concerning how sleep terror sleeping disorder came about. Some expert researchers on sleep and sleep medicine seem to believe and suggest that this disorder may be the result of the delayed maturing of a child's central nervous system. Meanwhile, it has been proven through experience that sleep deprivation, psychological stress and fever can be the triggering factors of sleep terror episodes on both children and adults.

The signs that physically show how an individual feel very fearful are very much the same from the symptoms that are exhibited by sufferers of sleep terror. The person is roused from a deep sleep breathing rapidly and breaking out in cold sweat. In addition, their heartbeat rate increases and they begin to hyperventilate.

A person who is in an episode of sleep terror usually jolts upright in bed. Sometimes persons with this kind of sleeping disorder are known to jolt upright, while crying out or screaming. He or she would often wake up with an anguished and fearful expression on his face. Some even manage to get up in bed, out their rooms and just run off, as if fleeing from someone or going off to somewhere not known.

Similar to several symptoms of sleepwalking, a family with a member who suffers from sleep terror must not be left alone while asleep. It would be very easy for a person to fall from a flight of stairs or fall out in windows if he or she would break out and run upon being wakened in the throes of a sleep terror episode.

Comforting or assuring a person who was partially aroused because of a sleep terror bout is quite a difficult thing to do. One must be very sensitive around a half-conscious person that is very fearful. Sometimes, it would be detrimental to try fully awakening the person with sleep terror. Sometimes, a person's attempt to restrain or console a person who is having an episode of sleep terror can be dangerous since he or she may react violently with a touch.

An episode of sleep terror disorder usually lasts from five to fifteen minutes. After one episode, a person who have not really woke up fully, usually goes back to sleep. Most people with sleep terror wake up in the morning without any recollection of anything that has happened the night before. However, they can still feel lingering sense of dread, foreboding or danger.
