What is Cheek Augmentation?
So what exactly is cheek augmentation? It is a cosmetic surgery procedure which is done to highlight the cheekbones in an individual's face by making them more pronounced. High cheekbones are considered to be an attractive and desirable trait in today's day and age, and many men and women look to cheek implants to achieve this look.
What happens during cheek augmentation surgery? In a nutshell, the surgeon makes an incision in the upper part of the mouth near the upper gum line and slips the implants into place. Cheek augmentation can also be done through the use of an external incision in the area of the eye, but procedures done in this manner often lead to visible scarring. The downside to having the surgery done through the mouth is there is a higher chance of infection due to the fact that the mouth contains bacteria.
The implants used in cheek augmentation surgery come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials. Silicone and polytetraflouroethylene (ePTFE) are the most commonly used. Also popular is using bone grafting to build up the cheekbones.
General anesthesia is typically administered during the one to two hour procedure and recovery times are usually between 7 and 10 days.
As far as risks go, the main ones are severe swelling, blood clots, post op bleeding, and infection. Extended loss of sensation can also result.
If you're considering cheek augmentation surgery, it's best to consult a surgeon. This procedure certainly isn't for everyone and it's important that you do your homework before making a decision.
