Which Aromatherapy Oil Should I Use?

Let me tell you, I have been using aromatherapy for years now for things like asthma, sleeping problems, bruises, air fresheners, cleansers and for general well being and still I find that there are so many oils with so many different uses that I could spend the rest of my life trying to learn them all. However, I do tend to stick to certain ones that have helped me on many occasions and assist in improving my mood or even calming me down.

Listed below are some great uses for a range of different oils around the home and for your family:

1. If you have stomach cramps oils such as fennel oil can help with that and for things like muscle cramps or muscle soreness tea tree oil is a great oil that works really well. It's again so much nicer rubbing an essential oil on your skin rather than a strong smelling anti-inflammatory. Just make sure that when you are putting oils on the skin you add them to a carrier oil. I just use Extra Virgin olive oil that I use in the cooking, that way I don't have to go out and buy another oil as I know I always have some on hand, anytime I want to do a bit of home aromatherapy.

2. Peppermint oil will help you to get rid of ants and to keep them away, while tea tree oil is also a good insect repellent and an excellent antiseptic for freshening up the toilet.

3. Oils such as lavender or sandalwood are fantastic and are well known for their calming effect and help to balance you. They are great for restoring serenity to your sense of self and help to create a more relaxed environment.

4. Burning rose oil in the bedroom can really help to restore compassion, enhance intimacy and passion and hopefully help to create a more romantic mood between you and your partner. Rose oil is a gentle and beautiful oil to burn and helps you to forget about all those kid smells and just focus on the beauty of yourself, your space and if you wish your partner.

5, Cedarwood too is a great oil to use when dusting or just when you want to get rid of a stale room odour. All of these oils help to make the home a more inviting place without the use of chemicals that can effect ones asthma, hay fever or allergies.

6. Essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint are great as antiseptic oils, to freshen up the bathroom or to use as an air freshener in a small spritz bottle with warm water.

7. Chamomile is great to help induce sleep and is a good oil to help calm the nerves.

8. Rosemary oil helps to stimulate you if you're feeling lethargic or dizzy and improves your concentration. Rosemary oil helps to revitalize a tired body and a tired mind.

9. Ylang ylang is good as an anti-depressant and helps with stress and to relieve anger. It is also used to balance and sedate and is also known as an aphrodisiac due to its strong sensual smell.

10. Geranium oil helps to balance the emotions and is a beautiful and refreshing oil that is wonderful in aromatherapy massages and in relieving tired and aching muscles. This is also a very good oil for respiratory problems, such as asthma and is a good anti-inflammatory.

If you are wanting to make an air freshener or a face spritz, a dark glass bottle works well. Just add warm water and your around 5 drops of your chosen oil and you now have either a beautiful room spray or a nice calming face spray during those times of stress. I use lavender, bergamot and orange oil in my face spray (3 drops of each) and I use lemongrass or rosemary in my air freshener (5 drops of either). You obviously may like to choose something completely different, but regardless the room spritz leaves a nice subtle gentle aroma in any room and is a lovely welcome to come home to.

I hope that you get true enjoyment out of experimenting with aromatherapy and really soaking up all those heavenly smells. It truly is a great way to forget about all those stresses and to reflect back on happy memories and times of good when things don't seem to be going quite the way they should.

May the wonderful smells of aromatherapy enrich you as much as they have me.
