DLL, Part, XLS Data Formats
Dll files are used and shared by a number of different software applications and in a way are similar to exe data formats for Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. Such files contain compiled procedures or drivers (such as for printers), which then a range of programs can all access. Many users hear about dll files when they install new piece of hardware and don't have the relative software for it. In such cases, Windows will prompt an error message with the name of the missing dll file. If you obtain any dll file from unreliable sources you should scan them for viruses, since they can also be infected.
Part files are created by download managers when a file is not downloaded completely, usually because of errors. Such files are therefore of no use and can only be used or opened once the whole download process is completed. The most common programs that create these files are eDonkey, eMule and Gozilla download managers. eDonkey is an outdated download application, whilst eMule and Gozilla are still very popular. Upon successful download, the part file is renamed to reflect the proper file name.
Xls data is created and used by Microsoft Excel. The main program is excel.exe and can also be viewed with xlview.exe. These files usually contain a collection of numbers, formulas and usually graphs too. Since xls files support macros and scripts, a certain discretion should be used when opening these files since they can be infected and harbor viruses.
