Parental Control Software - Why Do They Make Such Awful Parental Control Software?

Vendor Silliness

Why do vendors keep on pumping out Parental Control Software whose logs you can't see without logging onto the child's computer?

I don't know if you have Parental Control Software, but many parents prefer to install it in what's known as 'stealth mode'. This means that it's invisible to the child and they may not even know it's installed on their computer.

This is a standard feature of most Parental Control Software.

Viewing Logs

So what happens when you need to view the logs to check that your child is safe on-line?

You have to wait until they're away from the computer, sneak in and check the logs before they come back.

What if they'd put a password on that computer? Or otherwise altered it so you can't get in?

What if they'd just gone out to visit that Internet predator you were trying so hard to protect them from? You wouldn't know a darn thing about it.

Emailed Logs

Some Parental Control Software will email you logs periodically, but that's no good unless they just happen to email them to you at the exact moment you need them.

I mean, come on!

In this day and age with have the Internet. Along with that comes the ability to store and retrieve things remotely. So why not save the logs somewhere other than on the child's computer? It's safer too because then you can be sure they're not being tampered with by a clever child.

Remote Monitor

Then why not provide a remote monitor so that you can access the logs from any computer in the world to see what the child's been doing?

So this is really just a bit of advice for anyone looking to buy Parental Control Software - buy one with a remote monitor.

Such software does exist, but it's still a rarity. I really wish vendors would address this.

Remember, we're talking about the safety of our kids here.
