A friend of mine once said "don't wait and see IF your hard drive crashes, wait for WHEN it crashes." Having had several crashes myself, I now appreciate what he means. It sucks when it happens.
Losing your hard drive can be a very frustrating, stress-filled ordeal. But what exactly do those high-priced recovery experts do to your hard drive to get back all of your needed files? Is it worth the money?
The overall goal is simple- get the failed hard drive working long enough to transfer its contents to another hard drive. This is easier said than done, as many things can go wrong with a hard drive. Out of all these different problems, there are different fixes. For this reason, highly trained experts are assigned to the task. (Sorry, nothing you can do on your own)
Most of all data is recoverable, which is the good news. Even better news, is that the CIA has been known to have its own experts that can recover even the most destroyed hard drives. These experts work through every error, problem, and other tasks until they are able to slowly transfer the contents to another storage drive. It isn"t guaranteed, however, as sometimes hard drives are too far damaged for even professionals.
If you have gone through hard drive failure, and are looking for an alternative, there may be one way. Although this will damage your hard drive further, and is not recommended, you can "freeze" your hard drive- literally. Experiments have shown failed hard drives that have been frozen can operate up to 20 more minutes before failing.
