The Advantages of Remote Online Backup

Online backup operates in the same way as traditional backup methods, in that they store a second copy of important data. But the similarities end there; remote online backup has become the backup method of choice because it is more secure, practical, and cost-efficient.

Traditional backup methods have included copying important computer data onto compact discs, jump drives, or external hard drives. While this does involve making a second copy of the data, often times that second copy is just as vulnerable and susceptible to ruin or damage as the first. This is most often the case when the second copy is stored in the same location or near the original. For example, if you keep the second copy in your home along with the original, both could be lost or damaged during a fire, theft, flood, or other catastrophic event. Using online backup ensures your second copy is at a secure, remote location, often located miles away or perhaps even across the country.

Online backup is also a more practical and convenient solution because it can all be done on your own computer at your convenience; all that's needed is a computer with a broadband internet connection. Many online backup services are entirely web-based. Users simply download the necessary software and can pick and choose which files to backup. The data is then backed up when the computer is not in use, during a "sleep" or standby mode. You can add or change files as often as you'd like.

Online backup is also quickly becoming the most economical way to backup data. Traditional methods can be quite costly considering they can hold limited amounts of data. An external hard drive can cost upwards of $100 dollars and can only hold a specified amount. Online backup services often charge monthly fees and many offer unlimited storage, which provides a much more cost-effective backup solution.
