The Word Try
What does it mean to try to do something? According to Merriam Webster it can mean to examine or investigate judicially or to make an attempt at -often used with an infinitive like try to fix the car. Can you try to fix the car or is it better stated you can fix the car or not fix the car? Can you try to lift a chair? It is a funny word if you think about it. How can you try to do something? If you try to run you will either run or not run. It is one of those words that can drive you a bit crazy trying to figure it out. So, can you figure it out or not figure it out or can you just try?
It is one of those words that is interesting, like the word practice for those orthopedic doctors in Chicago south suburbs who have a practice. Are they really just practicing or do they know? To practice is a method of learning by repetition according to Wikipedia. It is one word that you may not want to spend too much time on or you may end up being cynical about the whole thing. For instance, are doctors trying to fix you or are they fixing you. With a broken bone it is an easy answer, they are fixing the bone and probably not practicing doing so. However, with a cardiac rehabilitation program there may be a little practicing and a little doing. Everyone is different so what worked for one may not work exactly the same way for the next. There has to be some data to follow on what works most of the time and some outliers on what should never be tried again as it didn't work at all.
This is true with all sorts of professions not just doctors. You don't have to go to one of the hospitals in the Chicago area to find people practicing their job. The reality is that many professionals practice as they continue to grow in their knowledge of what works and what doesn't work on the job. Stockbrokers practice all the time. If there were a formula that worked all the time every time, then there would be some very rich people. Some brokers have practiced more than others and have worked out formulas that work more often than their competitors so they do make people rich more often than breaking them.
Other professionals that practice are those that work in areas where there are a number of variables. For instance lawyers practice law; CPAs practice tax preparation and financial advisors practice giving advice. If they knew it all and there weren't any variables outside of their control, they wouldn't be giving advice they would be giving knowledge and promises that actually are valid. It is probably a good conversation to have with a friend of like mind because it is one of those that could go on indefinitely and no one would ever change their mind.
If you want to try a practice like orthopedic doctors in Chicago south suburbs then you probably need to get qualified, just like many other professionals. Much like a cardiac rehabilitation program or other practices in any one of the hospitals in the Chicago area are all well respected for their ability to learn by repetition and put that knowledge to use to help their patients.
