Cancer - Spirit And Life Lessons Of The Recovery Process

The three words that clients report as evoking the most fear, stress and devastation are: "It is malignant."

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be life altering to say the least. Yet, the soul curricula and life lessons that unfold with the process of cancer recovery can inspire you to embrace new ways of moving through life and achieve greater states of personal and spiritual growth.

Liberating One's Self from Fears

One of my cancer recovery clients harbored a deep fear about developing prostate cancer because of a family history. While this fear encouraged him to adopt a healthy diet and exercise routine, it also created stress and the sense of an overwhelming gray cloud hanging over his life.

Each day he lived with internal struggle, fear and anxiety, emotional states that can play a role in creating lowered immunity.

When this client was diagnosed with a slow growing form of prostate cancer, very different than the more aggressive variety typically found in his family, he realized it was an opportunity to let go of fears and connect with his higher healing power, God.

As he let go of fear, his body, mind and spirit were able to relax to take a more active role in his treatment, integrating holistic Chinese medicine along with prostate surgery and western medications.

It has been two years since this client has been enjoying not only a cancer-free state, but also a life absent of fear and anxiety. He now has the strong confidence that he can overcome any challenge that life presents.

Changing Belief Systems

Sometimes cancer can be a wake-up call to challenge one's paradigms. For example, one client held a belief that "Real men do not show emotion." He repressed grief and sadness after experiencing the loss of his elderly mother. Within months of her death, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.

Chemotherapy allowed him to achieve a cancer-free state, but no matter how hard he tried, he just could not seem to recover his health to a level of high energy or strong immunity. He was constantly ill with a variety of bacterial and viral infections.

The client hired me to work on releasing issues of grief and sadness with medical qi gong. Part of that work involved letting go of the energy pattern that said, "It's not okay to cry or show feelings." Thus, the client was able to weep and release for the first time in a way that was deeply cleansing and purging.

Within three days, he began to feel more energetic and reported that the flu-like symptoms that were almost a constant companion, cleared.

During his next lab appointment, his oncologist reported that his T cell (immunity cells) levels, previously below the normal range, were now in normal range. Within four weeks, he completely regained his strength and vitality.

Expanding Comfort Zones

When one of my clients was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he decided to set aside a tendency to follow only the conservative and traditional paths that were so much a part of his life, and take an active role to explore holistic healing methods.

As a result, he worked closely with holistic medical doctor that:

  • Advocated a special diet (see the anti cancer foods that I list at the end of this article).
  • Encouraged the use of increasing oxygen levels with qi gong and other methods.
  • Adopted meditation as a tool to build the immunity system.
  • Included glyconutrients including a variety of healing mushrooms and flax seeds in his diet.

This client has not only maintained a cancer-free state, but finds himself now trekking across the world to discover new places and people, something he never would have dreamed of doing before.

So remember, although it is stressful and life altering to receive a diagnosis of cancer, it may also be an opportunity to grow in new ways to develop new aspects of yourself that you might otherwise not have discovered.
