Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer
Cancer strikes fear in the heart of almost everyone. Your chances of contracting it are to some degree genetically determined-there's not much you can do about your relatives. The good news: you can reduce your chances of cancer by simple changes in lifestyle.
- Stop smoking. This habit contributes to one-third of cancer deaths, the major form being lung cancer, together with seven other cancers.
- Avoid the sun, and use a sunscreen with at least a 15 SPF (Sun Protection Factor) when you are in the sun. Overexposure to the sun causes skin cancer.
- Eat a diet that is less than 30 percent fat, better yet, 20 percent fat. High fat consumption increases your risk of developing colorectal cancer, and perhaps other cancers.
- Eat fiber, which can lessen your risk of developing colon cancer, perhaps also breast cancer.
- Eat vegetables and fruits, especially leafy green and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussel sprouts, kale, watercress, turnips) as well as yellow and orange vegetables and fruits. These play a role in the prevention of several kinds of cancer.
- Eat less of foods that are smoked or cured with salt or nitrate (hot dogs, bacon, and salt cod).
- Keep your weight down.
- Exercise.
- Take some aspirin every day (if you will not have problems with side effects). Check with your doctor first.
- Make sure that you take more than the RDA (but less than toxic doses) of vitamins. A, folic acid, C, and E.
- Avoid unnecessary x-rays.
- Cut back on alcohol.
- Reduce stress.
- For more information you can check out the National Cancer Institute's website or contact them by phone to speak to their Information Service. You can also check out the American Cancer Society's website for more detailed information on preventing cancer.
