Day Care Destruction
I drop in on a child care providers discussion forum from time to time and make comments/suggestions if I feel I can be of help (or just want to join in on a rant! ! ). Recently, one of the providers had a terrible ongoing problem with a child who was wilfully destroying her property i.e. toys, day care equipment and furniture. The parents laugh it off, ask the child to say an empty 'I'm sorry' and offer no discussion nor action for remedy. As you can imagine this poor lady is at her wits end. To date the child has deliberately destroyed over $200 worth of items. All too often day care providers can be faced with very delicate situations when handling difficult behavior in a child.

When Opportunity Knocks
I recently had the opportunity to catch a very interesting piece on a nationally syndicated morning radio show. The host talked about positioning yourself for success, creating and environment which allows you to realize your potential and preparing yourself to seize opportunity should it present itself. He stated that it is better to be well prepared and never to be presented with opportunity than to be unprepared and let opportunity escape. In business, employment and life in general we often form an idea of how we would like to see things turn out, ideally. We even go so far as to visualize the certain milestones needed to achieve that "end-point" But the question is are you prepared to seize that life changing opportunity should it present itself?

Why Do Nearly 90 of New Small Businesses Fail?
Everyone has dreamed about starting a business and being their own boss. Most who pursue that dream find only frustration and failure. Since 1986, as many as nine out of ten new businesses have closed in their first year. According to a recent survey of failed business owners, "lack of planning" was the number one reason listed for new business failure. Other reasons included were: lack of experience, money, and low sales. It may be that most people just get tired of feeling used and unappreciated at their jobs. They get their inspiration for entrepreneurship out of frustration. They see a company that they feel could be operated better, and they make the decision to go out and try it themselves.
Business Card Bloopers
When looking at a business card what do you notice? Generally the name, address, email, and phone number is what a typical lay-person will look for. Then why are people spending a hundred plus dollars on designing and printing business cards still in the world today? The reason is the misperception that the small business owner needs to look and act like the "Big Guy." Not a good idea for the "Little Guy" to follow the "Big Guy, " especially when it comes to wasteful spending like business cards. Business cards serve one purpose to take a place in another persons roll-a-dex. That's it! A card can still be classy without having to spend money on high quality embossing, really good card stock, and photo images all over the card.
To Do Lists - Where Do You Find the Time To Do Them?
If you're like me, many days are jam packed with more items on your "To Do" list than any human could possibly handle in one day. Why do we tend to put ourselves in this situation, when we end up with little or no time to enjoy life? Most of us work until 7-8pm, go to bed at 9-10pm, then get up early the next morning and do it all over again. Before you know it the week is gone, then a month is gone, then you're celebrating New Years Eve wondering if you enjoyed the year that just flew by... While I'm not a big fan of most time management systems, it's becoming obvious to me that I need to get a better handle on my work days, not only to get done what I need to do, but also to learn how to alleviate stress and overwhelm - since they both pop their ugly heads up all too often.
Buying a Small Business
Buying a profitable business is often the preferred route for people that do not want to take the huge risks involved in trying to start a business on their own. 80% of all start ups fail in the first 5 years so if you find a small business that has been trading successfully for at least a few years, you cut down the risks of failure dramatically. For the shrewd operator there are bargains to be had as many small business owners do not know how to value their business properly. I have come across instances where a small business has been sold for less than one years profit potential! One of the best approaches is to find a seller that is disposing of the business because s/he wants to retire.
