Increase Sales Coaching Tip - Improve Your Sales Skills by Changing Whines

Small business owners to sales manager continually want to achieve the goal to increase sales. Yet, one of the major obstacles is a cellar full of whines. These whines range from the vintage ones, over 100 years old, to newer whines. Most small businesses do not even know that they have a whine cellar or that they are drinking from these whines on a daily basis instead they attempt to improve other sales skills.

For example, one of my clients with whom I had recently made a purchase whined about all the questions that I requested him to answer before placing the order. There were just 5 questions. The questions were not hard, but the standard questions any purchasing agent usually asks. After four emails, he still failed to answer all questions.

In a second first hand experience, I recently attempted to find a new nail salon and through a referral (office manager of this establishment), I spoke with a nail technician who whined about the type of services that other salons delivered. All I wanted was to ask a couple of questions to determine if I wanted to change vendors. After listening to her whining, I decided to continue to patronize my current vendor.

How many times as a small business owner or sales professional do you think any of the following:

  • The economy is bad?
  • Boy, are these employees jerks?
  • I need more sales?
  • The company needs to cut prices because I cannot make any sales?
  • Our competitors are killing my sales?

How many of these thoughts are vintage whines? Possibly, once in a while, these are valid concerns, but for most small business owners to sales professionals, these are most definitely whines.

So what whines are you drinking each and every day to console yourself as to why you cannot increase sales? Dr. Norman Vincent Peale once said: "Change Your Thoughts; Change Your World"

My take on these wise words is: "Change Your Whines; Change Your Results" if you truly want to increase sales for your small business and truly improve your sales skills.
