Does Your Message Have Substance? 3 Quick and Easy Steps to Find Out

Unless you're one of those Hollywood party people who are "famous for being famous" (think Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie), to stand up in the world of PR and media attention, you must have something of substance to say.

Most likely, you have an idea of your expertise in your head but when was the last time you actually wrote it out and articulated it? When you explore your expertise in depth, you will unearth the substance of the message. Here is a quick and easy exercise to help you discover the substance of your message so when you go for the spotlight you'll dazzle them with your brilliance (rather than baffle them with BS, to paraphrase an old bumper sticker.)

To get the most out of this exercise you'll need something to write on and a few moments to reflect.

Complete the following sentences at least 10 times each. If you really want to get the most out of this, you'll complete each phrase at least 25 times. It's important that you push yourself to the finish line, even if you think you've run out of ways to phrase it. That's when the gems usually pop up.

1. I'm an expert at/in _____________________________ (complete at least 10 times)

2. My expertise helps people by _____________________ (complete at least 10 times)

3. What makes me different from other experts in my field is _________. (complete at least 10 times)

Now go back and look at the answers you came up with. Did a phrase or description pop up that surprised you? When you read it back, can you own how this describes you? Put a star next to the gems that came up for you then ask yourself how you can incorporate these into the way you deliver your message or in your marketing materials. That's how substance is formed.

Opportunities abound to share your expertise with the world. Right now, the media and others are clamoring for someone like you to come along with your unique perspective. Your ticket to great media coverage lies in the substance of your message- now it's up to you to go out and make it happen!
