Preparing Artwork For Print

Before sending graphic design artwork to a printer there are a few essential specifications which first need to be applied to the artwork layout. This is important as it helps to ensure that the printer is able to provide the final printed artwork as it was intended.

Trim Size

The trim page size is the final size of a printed page or layout, after being cut along crop mark guides and surplus edges are removed. The trim size is the length and width of your designed layout dimensions.

Crop Marks

Crop marks, also referred to as trim marks, are guides that enable the printer to accurately cut the printed artwork to the correct trim size. Crop marks are indicated by crossed lines, which are positioned at each corner of an image or page. Crop marks are placed outside the document are so that they do not appear on the final artwork.

Safety Margin Area

A safety margin area is an area or border within the layout of your design that runs around the edge of your layout. The purpose of the margin area is to indicate a safe "live" area within the margin where your design can be placed safely with no risk of being inadvertently cropped during the cutting stage of the print process.

Bleed

If your artwork or image extends to each edge of the printed area, it will be necessary to add a bleed area to your layout. The bleed area like the safety margin area runs around the edge of your layout. The bleed area however goes outside the boundary of the actual page size. The reason for including a bleed into your designed layout is to ensure the image or design still runs to the edge of the page once trimmed to size. If no bleed is included, a white edge may appear around the edge of the page where the trim didn't precisely match the crop mark guide.

Bleed areas vary dependent on the printer and page size, therefore it is always recommended that you talk to your printer about setting bleed areas and discuss other print specifications and measurements.
