Police Your Way to Better Management
What is Management? There is little disagreement that it involves the process of "getting things done through other people." And most experts would say that certain basic functions are common to the process.
Management Functions
The generally agreed upon basic management functions are: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling (P.O.L.C.E.)
Managers must engage in Planning to set the direction of the organization so that mission, goals, and objectives can be attained. They also must Organize staff and resources into an effective mechanism for the achievement of these directions. To provide effective coordination and inspiration the organization demands a Leader. Finally, to make certain resources are not squandered, and that progress is made efficiently, Control is essential. The POLC paradigm has endured well and has an important place in management texts and treatises. However, perhaps it is time to revisit this model.
P.O.L.I.C.E.
Here come the management POLICE. In addition to being an easy to remember acronym, there are two more important management functions which have been incorporated.
The first is Informing.
The Information Age is upon us. In today's era of rapid and pervasive communication, information is essential. The manager must constantly communicate by Informing, and being Informed.
The second addition is Enhancing.
The manager's role should be additive to the organization and enhance the ability of the organization to compete, survive, grow and prosper. The manager's presence must make a difference. Merely being present as a functionary, performing the essential tasks of POLC, will not necessarily result in excellence. The manager's efforts must benefit, improve and enhance the prospects and reality of the organization.
POLICE Power
The power of the POLICE is well recognized. They patrol our streets, maintain the order, and apprehend miscreants.The power of P.O.L.I.C.E. in management is in the application of its components. Remember to consciously, conscientiously, and consistently apply POLICE Power in your organization.
