I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud by William Wordsworth
When you lie on the grass and look at the sky, you may not realize it, but the sight is ever-changing. It simply and subtly displays a different mise en scene as you lie there and watch. The clouds play across the stage in featherlike or cotton-like costumes. Some are sporty and others appear like lambs, meek and mild.
In the poem "I wandered Lonely as a Cloud', the significance is to think of one stray cloud that moves slowly across the sky. The poet likens himself to that one cloud, as he wanders along his way. He then from his lofty view looks down at a field of daffodils beside a lake.
The daffodil has been praised for centuries by poets and musicians. It seems to be a symbol of love and happiness. The daffodil is a beautiful flower. Can you imagine a field filled with these yellow flowers? The daffodil belongs to the specie narcissus and the Greek word narka'o means "to be stupefied". This is indirectly how the poet feels as he stands looking at these flowers in bloom. Think of the scent that fills the air. He is overpowered and even slightly intoxicated by the narcotic effects of the scent.
And the flowers are alive. Using metaphor, he speaks of a crowd and then a host - as if he is their guest. They are there to entertain him as they flutter and dance in the breeze beside the lake. The flowers stretch along the shore like stars that twinkle and shine in the Milky Way. There are so many, they are innumerable. They are personified as "tossing their heads in sprightly dance."
The beautiful scene in front of him is obviously something he has never seen before. The presence of the daffodils is, to him, more beautiful than the sparkling and refreshing water of the lake. They give an air of happiness and light-heartedness. He stares at the flowers not realising what the long-term effects will be.
Later, when he is bored and in a pensive mood, he recalls that day. The scene is etched in his memory and brings happiness to him.
