Selling Your Digital Photos

Photography is just a hobby for most people. But did you know you can make money selling your digital photos? With the advent of the internet, it has never been easier to sell your photos.

Before trying to sell your photos, here are some things to remember:

  1. The quality and marketability of your photos is very important - make sure they are well-arranged and noise-free.
  2. Your photos should be of interesting subjects, very captivating and sought-after.

As long as these two things are in order, then you're ready to start selling your digital photos.

Here are some additional tips to help you get started:

  • Create A Portfolio - a themed portfolio with as many photos as possible is very important for selling your photos and can replace testimonials or references as proof of your abilities.
  • Include A Contact Sheet - if sending out your digital pictures to magazines, newspapers and publishing houses, always include a hard copy contact sheet with your digital CD or DVD distribution.

The above tips are only applicable if you're selling your digital photos to offline businesses. Besides magazines, newspapers and galleries, you can also sell offline at art fairs or markets. You could also engage an agent to sell your pictures for you for a commission.

Stock photography sites, such as iStock and Fotolia, are the most convenient way for selling your digital images online. However, the competition is intense and to make any good money, you will need to have a very large image portfolio. You may also be required to pay a commission of about 20 to 50% to the agency for each digital image downloaded.

Another way of selling your digital photos online is by setting up a website devoted to marketing and selling your own images. However, because this involves a lot of work and takes some time before sales actually start coming through it should only be done as part of a long term strategy.
