Free Photo Editors - Two Great Packages

You're looking for a photo editor but you don't want to fork over any cash. You're in school, just plain cheap or on a tight budget. No problem because there are a couple of great photo editors available that are absolutely free.

GIMP is open source software available for free. Open source means that not only is the software available so is the source code. Paint.NET is another photo editor. It's not open source but is a great photo editor. It too is free. I have installed and tested both of these free photo editors. I was very impressed with both of them.

So how do you compare these two packages? First, take a couple of minutes to decide why you want a photo editor:

  • Do you need more features than what's provided by your camera software?
  • Are you interested in advancing your knowledge of photo editing?
  • Do you want to create custom photos or graphics for a website or eBook?
  • Are you interested in selling photos online?
  • Do you need all of the features, tools and effects of a complete package?

Next write down what you expect or want from the software. For example:

  • Do you need specific special effects? Which ones?
  • Do you need to resize a lot of photos? Or convert file formats?
  • Do you need specific tools for customizing your images?
  • Should the software have a familiar look and feel? Or are you willing to use a different style of software?

After defining why you want a new photo editor and what you want from it, you can then compare photo editors with a goal of meeting your needs. Take the time to define what you want and why you want it. If you just download the software and try it, you may not be happy with your decision down the road.

When you're ready, download the software and install it. Try editing several images. Try the special effects. Upload images to your website. Print some edited images. Try the help system even if you don't need it. Then ask yourself some questions:

  • Is this program easy to use and understand?
  • Does it have what I need or expect?
  • Do the features, tools and effects provide what I need?
  • Does it have good help information?
  • Will it be a good choice down the road?

Both Paint.NET and GIMP are great photo editors. But only you can decide if either one has what you need. Try them both. They're free. The install and uninstall steps are easy for both programs.

Capture your life with photos!
