Understanding the Rule of Thirds

Have you ever wondered how to set up the perfect shot, a picture that is pleasing to the viewer? Well in this article I will explain a key element to understand the rule of thirds for digital photography and by the end you will be able to capture better photos.

For your composition imagine a grid placed over it with three vertical lines and three horizontal lines. The theory is if you are taking a landscape shot it would be that your sky is in the top third of the picture, the middle ground would be in the middle third and the foreground in the bottom third. Then for a winter scene there would be a nice cabin placed in one of the four bisecting points created by the grid.

Following this method you will be able to set up a shot that is visually pleasing. However after a while you may think that the rule of thirds is too comfortable to use and that the little creative side inside you would like to take a hammer to it. Well that is perfectly alright. For instance, you capture a desert scene with an oasis and you want to emphasize the oasis by putting it right in the top middle third of the photo, well follow your instincts. If your instincts tell you to capture more of the shapes of the plants and trees and cut out the sky completely, that's alright to.

Composition takes time to master, but with the help of the rule of thirds you will be able to capture more beautiful photos and in time you will better your digital photography.
