Bored to Death is a Great New Show
Every year, it seems like a new television show comes out that grips its viewers and immediately pulls them in. It looks as if the comedy for 2009 that does this will be Bored to Death, a new series on HBO that broadcasts every Sunday night. While I don't watch the episodes live, I've caught all three episodes so far on demand, and I've absolutely loved every one of them. This show, which takes place in New York, centers around the life of 30 year old Jonathan Ames (played by Jason Schwartzman), a successful novelist struggling to write his second novel. His girlfriend has just left him, making his life more difficult than before, and he's trying to find his way from here.
Going to the Movies
If you have ever watched an old movie you will have noticed actors had to be very versatile in those days. They had to sing, dance and act. Especially movies made during WW1, WW2 and the Great Depression. Musicals were predominant in those days. Movie makers wanted to cheer up the people and what better way than to make a joyous picture show filled with singing and dancing. There has not been a really good musical made since "Grease" in 1978. Although, some people did really enjoy the "High School Musical" movies, they were not as popular as "Grease." Not everyone appreciates the effort that went into making one of these films.
Michael Moore s Capitalism - A Love Story
Michael Moore has tackled tough issues before. In 2006 his film Sicko detailed the disgrace that is the US health care system which costs more than any other system in the world despite providing care that is far below the level of every other industrialized nation. The reason that the health care system costs so much here in the US despite not actually providing good quality of care is that the system is based around greed rather than the health of the people. This greed also goes by another name, "capitalism." Capitalism (as it is practiced in the US today) is actually the root of most of America's problems and that is why Moore's new movie Capitalism: A Love Story is his most important yet.
Snow Queen Can Melt Even the Coldest Hearts
Snow Queen is one of the most underrated Korean TV dramas of all time. The leading actor and actress of the series did win awards for their excellent performances. However, the series did not fare as well in other countries in Asia. In fact, I happened to order a DVD copy of this drama by chance as I was surfing through the internet. The best thing about this TV series is the depth of its story. For example, it explores the realm of father and son relationships very closely. It tackles how intense pressure coming from the father can cause even the brightest and most successful son to commit suicide in the face of failure.
Why Are Korean Television Dramas So Addicting?
Have you ever wondered what makes Korean dramas so popular among Asians? Why do you think they stay glued to their television sets time and again to watch series after series that seem to follow the same old plot lines and twists? I believe that these shows are able establish a strong emotional connection with its audience. And this is the main reason they find these shows so addicting. Life isn't easy. There are times when you feel really happy. But for the most part you are struggling to make a living, or nursing the wounds of your recently concluded love life. Then you watch this television show from Korea and you go: 'Hey, this girl or guy is going through exactly the same thing I am.
