Actors on Acting - Part 3 - Avoiding Scams
There are a lot of programs out there that entice people to sign-up for stardom. These are all cons; the business does not work that way. Whenever someone asks you for money, to get into the business, run the other way!
These people may promise that you will meet a casting director from a big city and they charge any where from $500 to $2,000; and promise acting movie parts. But why would they bring in a casting director to cast an unknown actor when they can have their pick of already working actors in the area?
There is only one way to break into showbiz and that's by studying the craft and becoming good at it. You will never buy your way into it. You may know someone that could pull some strings for you, and get you in, but that will not make you an actor. You will still need to learn the craft. And don't forget to use your head. Take to time to learn the business end of showbiz.
Everybody in this industry is trying to make money, especially casting directors and agents. If an agent looks at you and really believes in your talent, you are seen as a product that he can sell; then he's not going to ask you for any money.
If an agent tells you that you need to pay a registration fee to be represented, go to his photographer and/or to take his acting classes....that's illegal. That is definitely a no-no in the industry. But there are still people doing it because they think you're not aware of the scam.
Most of us are not stupid; but sometimes, in our eagerness to follow our dream of being in the movies, we let our guard down. When people tell you they can help get you there, it is easy for you to believe them because they have painted a beautiful picture of you getting there. It's easy to be ripped off. And people know that, and they have no scruples about taking your money.
An agent provides an actor an opportunity for an audition... the actor then gets his own job!
There are some sad stories out there where a young actress wanted so badly to follow her dream that it cost her $5,600 just to get three head shots done. Don't fall victim to this. Use your smarts, do the research, stay informed.
It is very important that actors study SAG rules. The rules are there for a reason, to protect actors, so that an actor isn't taken advantage of. Even if you don't ever want to join the union, you still owe it to yourself to know the rules of the business. So, stay informed and study your craft, then go out and become a working actor.
