Cecil Day Lewis was an Anglo-Irish poet, novelist, translator, and essayist who lived from 1904 to 1972. He was born on April 27, 1904 in Ballintubbert, Queen's Country, Ireland. His father was a priest in the Church of Ireland after receiving his divinity degree in 1900. His mother, Kathleen Squires, was the daughter of a civil servant. She died when Lewis was four years old, which forced him into the care of his father and his mother's sister, Olive Squires.
