Chess - Why Can t They Ever Get it Right?

I get a little paranoid when I see chessboards set up incorrectly in films and on the boxes of cheap sets. Well, I watched the star-studded film 'The Wild Geese' again a while back (the one in which British mercenaries are sent to an African country to free an imprisoned 'Nelson Mandela' type) and what did I see in one of the last scenes? Stewart Grainger, brandy glass warming in his cupped hand, eyed his chess set and moved one of the 6 inch high pieces for all the world as if he knew what he was doing. And, yes, the board was set up with a black square in the right hand corner. If he'd really been a chess player (like Humphrey Bogart was), his professional pride wouldn't have allowed him to make the move until the board had been correctly set up.

Bamboo in Contemporary Sculpture and Installation Art

Bamboo has been a subject of paintings and artisanal crafts in East Asia for centuries. Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples are often decorated with carved bamboo shoots and Zen paintings featuring the bamboo plant. However, in the world of high art (especially Western art), the bamboo plant has been relatively underrepresented. Granted that, as a subject of paintings, the value of any plant (or any object, for that matter) is completely subjective, bamboo as a material for sculpture and installation art is incredibly versatile. One of the reasons why bamboo and other organic materials have not been used as much for sculpture in the world of high art is that sculpture and monumental artwork was always perceived as having to be permanent.

They Have Not Perished

(The Inhabitants of Easter Island, 2002) And I know them also. I had seen them also. Who had never been further from their island, Easter Island than I could return by night to sleep? It was as if they had not yet even seen cellphones, like twilight itself had been frozen over that little island that didn't hardly even show on a map, that not even 600-people out of all the world, lived, and less than 3, 000-visitors came to visit a year, looking out into all directions and touching nothing for two-thousand miles, never any thing bigger, or big enough for a plane to land on-to be remembered;

Feeling My Way Around a Fiber Festival

Everybody loves a festival, even the folks who shave furry animals and make things out of their soft natural fibers. My home town hosts an annual Fiber Festival, with up-close-and-personal access to exotic fiber-bearing critters, demonstrations by talented artisans, and lots of shopping opportunities. There are food vendors with tasty treats and drinks. There are wood chips on the ground. It's a lot like the county fair, but they don't slaughter everything afterward. Plus, it smells better and the livestock is a lot cuter. The stars of these festivals are the animals. This year, first place for adorability was a tie between the Angora rabbits and the alpacas.

Curse of the Sphinx

(A true account, while in Egypt, 1998) Not one police guard or soldier saw him, other than the soldier captain, and the guide who was with the stranger in the unanimous dark night, standing between the two large feet of the Sphinx, in Egypt, outside of Cairo. But in a few minutes there would be no one who did not know the taciturn man who came from America, who now stood deeply inside those two paws of the Sphinx (side by side)-no one that is within a mile from the Sphinx, he took a picture with his camera, a flash that lit up the midnight area. What was certain was that the man climbed up alongside of the Sphinx, without noticing the all-purpose police, the guards of the Sphinx, those who saw his camera's flash, nauseated they were not to have been told of his presence, and bloodthirsty for money, it cost $1400, to do what he was doing for $140-dollars, of which he paid only the guide and Captain of the Army, stationed by the Sphinx.

German Composer BW Recknagel Talks Prince

In 1992, at the height of his career, Prince had the guts to disconnect himself from his major record label and decided to continue on his own. With no major backing, no supportive hit singles and completely out of the industry machinery, Prince still managed to be the highest earner in 2004, sold out 21 nights in the London O2 arena in 2007 within seconds and just recently had a No. 2 Album entry in the US Billboard charts. How come? 1. Prince Works Despite his continues stream of songwriting, producing and releasing his own records, Prince constantly re-invents himself as time demands.

I m Going to Miss You

""N- n- now th- that don't kill me can only make me stronger... I need you to hurry up now 'cause I can't wait much longer... I know I got to be right now 'cause I can't get much wronger... Man I've been waitin' all night now, " you sang along with the radio, Stronger from Kanye West. You liked it... It rang true. What didn't kill you made you stronger. What didn't make you stronger, you killed. It was a mutual sacrifice. Being a fallen angel made you feel truth of both sides of the equation. You were a good person, yes. You were double-sided, yes. You were two-edged, yes. A lot of people described you as a double-edged sword.

The Sioux Uprising of 1862

The Sioux Uprising was one of the events that occurred during Abraham Lincoln's presidency. The Civil War itself was one of the major events during the Lincoln Presidency. The Sioux Uprising was an event that took place in 1862 when the relationship between the Americans and Native Americans went sour. The main reason behind the event was explained by several veterans of the Civil War. The reason was pretty simple and a trivial one that led to a major war. In August 1862, a hunting party consisting of Sioux Indians went to the borders of Dakota and crossed their boundaries and entered Minnesota which was a Union territory.
