About Antique Tapestries

Tapestries have a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. Weaving has been done as far back as ancient Greek times. Originally, tapestries were used as large wall hangings that helped to keep out cold drafts. They were often woven to depict a historical event. Sometimes tapestries were used to make copies of famous paintings. As time went on, antique tapestries started to become cherished for their beauty and workmanship.

Antique tapestries have been done in many countries including England, France, Holland, and Italy. Antique tapestries are considered works of art because of their attention to detail and different effects. Many tapestries haven't survived through the years. This is often because they were not properly taken care of. Often times, tapestries were used as rugs and became worn out. They often were folded up and ruined by water or moths as well. As a result, the antique tapestries that did survive are considered very special and valuable, often worth quite a bit of money.

The most important antique tapestries are those that were well-made. The better the effects and colors used in the tapestries, the more valuable the tapestries.

Today, you can find antique tapestries from around the world. They should be chosen for their images and amount of detail in the piece. Tapestries are often hung on the wall. They are very easy to keep clean and will last for many years if properly cared for. Antique tapestries should be gently cleaned of surface dirt using a vacuum cleaner. Hang them in a place that does not get direct sunlight. If they are stored, they should be rolled and not folded and kept in a clean, dry place. You can also have them professionally cleaned. Many of today's beautiful tapestries will increase in value as they become antiques.
